Music is a tool for creativity, innovative thinking, communication, collaboration and motivation.  It also helps build relationships and foster teamwork.  All of which are needed in a competitive business environment.  Plus it’s entertaining, which is good for the soul and morale in today’s tough environment.

1. Song Division inspires creativity:

How?
Through song writing!
The process of song writing requires imagination and creativity.
Song writing requires ideas and concepts to be brought to life in a lively, meaningful and memorable way.
Through ‘poetic license’ songwriters can express themselves with unlimited creativity.
The song becomes a metaphor for one’s thoughts, feelings and ideas.
Converting messages and ideas into lyrics and music requires emotion, originality, and inventiveness.  These form the bedrock of innovation.

Why this is important in business?

“It’s not easy becoming the next Google – or GE, or 3M, or name your favorite powerhouse of imagination. But for anyone trying to compete in the coming decades, creativity is one process that can’t be left for later.” Stay globally competitive: Be like Google, By Peter Georgescu, Fortune Magazine

“Creative people pay attention to their world, see things differently, challenge assumptions, take risks, are not afraid to fail, and strive to generate multiple solutions to problems. They are passionate about creativity and seek opportunities to innovate.” Everyday Creativity: Principles for Innovative Design. Dr. Larry G. Richards

“A recent survey of top executives from Fortune 500 companies throughout the United States ranked creativity more important than intelligence for success in business today.  That’s because these demanding times require leaders who can respond quickly and imaginatively to change.” Innovative Thinking:  Six Simple Secrets, Padi Selwyn

“Play opens up new channels of creativity and increases the level of satisfaction we experience at work. How employees feel about their company is directly related to their level of productivity and creativity. Research shows that highly motivated employees are up to 127% more productive than averagely motivated employees in high complexity jobs.” Fortune Magazine

2. Song Division supports innovative thinking:

How?
Through song writing!
The process of song writing pushes people out of their comfort zone and forces them to think about concepts in a new way.
For example, a team may have to write a song about a new corporate value such as ‘integrity’. The song writing process forces the team to think about what this actually means to them and how they can bring this concept to life.  They need to make sense of the concept and take it from a static description to an active one.
The topic or issue is translated, changed, adapted and reinvented for the song.
The process allows ideas to become free-flowing.
This process of ‘rethinking’ opens the way for innovation.
The permission for such thinking then translates back in the workplace.
People feel safe and more confident to explore and discuss new ideas back at work.

Why is this important in business?

The more ideas, the more opportunities for progress.
Fresh thinking leads to a more exciting and profitable company.
“Innovative Thinking is about more than retaining or growing market share; it’s about creating new products and services, discovering new markets for existing products and services, and improving existing products and services, which all result in greater revenues. Innovative Thinking isn’t limited to the tangible; it can be applied to systemic issues, human resources, product delivery, market channels, sales, marketing, public relations, finance, ecommerce, web design, and even advertising.” The Three C’s of Innovative Thinking, Lon S Safko

3. Song Division improves communication and relationships:

How?
There is considerable interaction, discussion, negotiation and decision making involved in the group work.
The interaction opens up conversations between colleagues that may not otherwise happen in the work context (such as between baby boomers and Gen Y’ers for example).
People get to know each other in a new, non-threatening and relaxed environment where music (which everyone loves in one way or another) is at the core.

Why is this important in business?

Communication at work results in greater productivity.
A cohesive team will work harder and more efficiently.
Relationships are at the core of a happy work environment and happy employees.
Happy employees work harder.
A happy workplace is a motivated workplace.
“The literature completed in the areas of team building, organizational communication and productivity are relative to each other. Team building has been shown to enhance organization morale. This boosts employee morale and results in increased employee productivity.” Teambuilding in Organizations: Communication and Productivity, www.associatedcontent.com

“Actively ‘disengaged’ employees were estimated by Gallup to cost Australian business around $32.7 billion per annum through poor productivity, absenteeism and a lack of pride in their work.” Walking The Line, Trevor Barkway, Motivation Magazine

4. Song Division supports collaboration and teamwork:

How?
Teams have to hash out ideas and make decisions about the lyrics and music, requiring strong cooperation, encouragement and support.
Having pressure to complete tasks in a limited amount of time tests existing teamwork skills and exposes skill gaps.  The success of completing the task makes people feel cohesive and united.
These achievements build trust.

Why is this important in business?

Research shows that trust is the basis for creating a healthy work environment.  Trust is the necessary precursor for be able to rely upon another person; cooperating as a group; taking thoughtful risks; experiencing believable communication.  In other words, “trust forms the foundation for effective communication, associate retention, motivation, and contributions of discretionary energy”.
Trust rules! The most important secret, Heathfield, Susan M. 2002, available at http://humanresources.about.com/library/weekly/aa041401a.htm.

5. Song Division improves morale and motivation:

How?
We don’t claim to solve all work issues in just one session.
But we do see an improvement in morale after a session!
Participants appreciate the fact that they are able to have fun in work time.
They appreciate that their bosses have valued them enough to support this kind of out-of-office activity.
A motivated workplace is a more productive workplace.

Why is this important in business?

“We know that people do their most creative work when they love doing what they’re doing. There’s no substitute for intrinsic motivation, that is, motivation that comes from within. Although such motivation doesn’t guarantee creativity, dislike or lack of interest in work practically guarantees non-creativity.” Ten Keys to Creative Innovation by Robert J. Sternberg, Ph.D. and Todd I. Lubart, Ph.D

6. Song Division entertains:

How?.
The live band and ‘rock concert’ enables people to be entertained while also fulfilling team building objectives.
The team appreciates being entertained and having fun in work time.
And the session is more effective because it’s team building cleverly disguised as a rock n roll concert!

Why is this important in business?

“Fun is all about creativity, innovation, play, experimentation, progress, and seeing real things come to life. If you make fun an enemy of business, you’re judging all these desirable concepts by association.” Innovative Leader, Padi Selwyn
