After each performance, the performer (or team) get to 'pass the hat' through the crowd, collecting cash based on their performance. The three teams who raise the most money are guaranteed a spot in the finals, where the hat is passed around again to determine the winner. The event owner is encouraged to set a goal for the total amount raised, and match this if the goal is reached.
In the lead up to the event, a list of 'reluctant but willing' participants (e.g. executives) is provided to all attendees. People 'buy in' their chosen participant by donating to your charity. The top five earners are asked to prepare and perform. The selected performers have the chance to 'buy themselves out' by matching the funds raised in their name. If they do this, the company or the crowd (or your top sales rep) can 'buy them back in' by matching the new total, forcing the performance to proceed at triple the earnings for your charity!
